One of my favorite mid-2000s DC Comics series was Greg Rucka’s run on Checkmate, which featured Mr. Terrific and others trying to rehabilitate the secretive organization after MAX LORD nearly used it to take control of the world. It was a political drama – mixed with action – done really well. Unfortunately, the idea has lain dormant for a long while.
Thankfully, it seems that Brian Michael Bendis’ time at the publisher will help bring the concept back.
Now that LEVIATHAN has destroyed all the spy groups in the DC Universe, and threatened to reveal all the secrets they have at their disposal, there has to be some kind of organized response. Who better than some of the heroes who Leviathan targeted when they made their debut?
The members drafted into the new Check Mate are such a random collection of street-level characters, and I think it may be my favorite collection of characters ever. Bendis gathers Green Arrow, Manhunter, The Question, Mister Bones, Talia al Ghul, Steve Trevor and Lois freaking Lane! There’s so much promise there for the upcoming Check Mate series, as the group works to counter Leviathan under the control of former Manhunter Mark Shaw.
Since Dick Grayson went back to being Nightwing at the end of the New 52 (or was that the DC You era?), we’ve been seriously lacking in a good spy series, but we’re finally going to go back to that well soon. I have high hopes for what’s coming next.
