It’s been a long, strange trip for Wally West. From teen sidekick to member of the Justice League to being completely forgotten by everyone who ever cared about him, things haven’t been easy for the fastest man alive. He couldn’t even get a happy ending after he retired to live a normal life with his wife and kids. Instead, he gets wiped from existence.

And then there’s the aftermath of his return to the DC Universe to kick off the Rebirth era. But, I think, the less said about the ending to HEROES IN CRISIS the better.

The Flash Forward mini was supposed to set Wally on his own course after that terrible decision of a miniseries, and it certainly made some serious changes to Wally’s status quo. Instead of being the Fastest Man Alive, he’s now taken over for the New God Metron on the Mobius Chair, with allthe knowledge in the multiverse, imbued with the powers of Watchmen’s Doctor Manhattan.

Wally West has now become the most powerful being in the DC Universe.

On the plus side, Wally managed to make a deal with the Tempus Fuginaut to bring his kids back to their mom, Linda Park, who finally seems to remember who Wally was. That probably would have been nice to have happen before he let the depression take over, pushing him to kill a whole bunch of beloved characters.

I doubt this is what DC Comics had in mind for the character when they brought Wally West back at the beginning of Rebirth, but there are interesting possibilities for their next big events. But it would have been nice if they could have given him a semblance of a happy ending.
