A sinister anthem of distortion.
No matter what he is working on, you can always count on Trent Reznor to give 100% of his energy and imagination to the music he creates. Just a couple of weeks after he took home his second Oscar for his score with Jon Batiste and Atticus Ross on Soul, he’s returned to Nine Inch Nails for a song with noise rockers HEALTH. The result is one of aggression and gothic power, building from a pulsing synth line into an earthquake of percussion and processed guitars. When Reznor and HEALTH’s Jake Duzsik sing together in the chorus, it has all the power of the best tracks from either project.
The track is a follow-up from HEALTH’s most recent album, DISCO4 :: PART IDISCO4 :: PART I, which focused on collaborations with other artists. It’s likely that this is the opening salvo for Part 2. And this is far more than a Reznor guest-spot. The two musicians exchanged demo ideas and assembled the music from the ground-up. It’s a combination of the best instincts from both of them.
“It’s fucking Nine Inch Nails. That speaks for itself. You don’t need a clever quote to encapsulate it,” Health said about the song. That pretty much sums it up! Reznor is one of the best artists working today. Here’s hoping there’s plenty more like this coming soon from both HEALTH and Nine Inch Nails.
“Isn’t Everyone” is out now via Loma Vista Recordings.
