The best part about Scott Snyder’s Dark Nights: Death Metal universe is how it allows for some seriously crazy situations that we would never see otherwise. After all, the infinite possibilities of a Dark Multiverse populated by Batman’s darkest fears and impulses must be a pretty wild place.
It was only a matter of time before someone thought to throw Lobo into the mix.
An intergalactic bounty hunter who only looks out for himself (and the next big payday), Lobo is already a crazy character. He fits right in with the insanity of the Death Metal one-shots and off-shoots. Generally considered one of DC Comics’ space-based characters and someone who generally goes toe-to-toe with Superman, this special reveals that Batman has taken notice of Lobo. And there’s even a Dark Multiverse Batman/Lobo mash-up.
Lobo comes upon the Bat Main Man – a Batman who injected himself with Czarnian DNA – as he is tasked by Lex Luthor to find Death Metal itself, a property that can alter reality. It maybe wasn’t Luthor’s finest moment tasking Lobo with a job like that.
Whether this one-shot plays into the main Dark Nights: Death Metal narrative remains to be seen. We still have a few more issues of the miniseries to get through, after all. But this was a fun distraction that keeps the Dark Multiverse at the forefront while we wait for the next installment.
