DC Comics’ homage to the Fantastic Four continues in its second issue, putting our heroes in even more fantastical situations, like trying to escape being killed by a giant monster in the Dark Multiverse that, just last issue, they thought was just a landmass. It’s an easy enough task for Mr. Terrific – one of the smartest men in the DC Universe. And once they get back home, using a portal to chop off the fingers of the monster in the process, it would be time to continue on together to solve the mystery of Tom Strong, right?

It’s never that easy. Terrific wants nothing to do with his new team, and heads off on his own to solve the conundrum, leaving Plastic Man, Metamorpho and Phantom Girl looking on in shock.

But, again, it’s not that easy. Something in the Dark Multiverse bonded the four heroes together, forcing them to work together in their new mission. Should be fun for a group of people who don’t seem to care for each other.

We get drips and drabs of plot here, but the interactions between the members of the team make everything about this book worth it. The new incarnation of Phantom Girl gets most of the focus here, as we learn her backstory, clarifying that she’s not necessarily the same Phantom Girl from the Legion of Superheroes. We’ll have to see if she has any connections to the original.

Giving purpose to characters that haven’t had much to do in a long time, THE TERRIFICS is easily the best part of DC’s New Age of Heroes, and I’m really looking forward to see where Lemire takes this.
