Netflix has been the home of Marvel’s Defenders universe, but soon it will have a new cast of comic book characters calling the streaming service home.
On Monday, Mark Millar announced that Netflix had purchased his Millarworld line of comic books, with the intention of making movies and series about the characters.
The comics company has produced some pretty high-quality, critically-acclaimed books since its inception about 15 years ago, focusing on creator-owned content that had a different scope and tone than the other major comic book companies.
While Millar’s comic book properties have already made it to the silver screen with Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service, the purchase means new properties like Starlight, Jupiter’s Circle and Empress could see live-action releases.
On his Millarworld message boards, the writer was still in a state of shock about how exciting the future was:
Over the years, Millarworld has amassed twenty different franchises working with the world’s greatest artists and now Millarworld has been bought by the hottest, most exciting entertainment company on the planet. To say this is the best thing that ever happened in our professional lives would be an understatement.
Netflix also seemed to be excited about the news.

Jupiter’s Legacy/Jupiter’s Circle seems like a perfect series for Netflix. The comic book, written by Millar with art from Frank Quitely, is a generational tale about a group of adventurers who gain powers in the hopes of leading America to greatness. On the other hand, Starlight, about a man who fought battles in space going back to his adventures 40 years later, should be a great series of movies.
No projects were announced when the acquisition went public, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it soon.
