An upbeat anthem from the young punks.
Despite most of them not even being in high school yet, The Linda Lindas have already made some big waves this year. Earlier this year, a video of their song, “Racist, Sexist Boy,” about an experience their drummer, Mila, had with a racist classmate during the COVID pandemic, went viral. It got the band an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel and won praise from Tom Morello, Kathleen Hanna, Flea and many more. Now, with “Oh!,” the Linda Lindas are showing that they have plenty more to say.
The song bounces with a buoyant mix of surfy punk guitar riffs, sounding like a cross between The Go Go’s new wave energy and Sleater-Kinney’s riot grrrl propulsion. It finds guitarist Bela Salazar singing about trying to help out a friend, only for it to blow up in her face. “But when I don’t speak up/ There’s nothing but regret/ I can’t stop thinking of/ What could’ve happened next,” she sings, as the band shouts out the title to end each line. It’s a fun, energetic anthem from a young band that’s clearly just getting started.
“Oh!” is out now.
