Dive in.
It’s been a time of change for The Joy Formidable. Lead singer and guitarist Ritzy Bryan wound up relocating from her Welsh homeland to the deserts of Utah, spending her time between the two locations. It’s out of this journeying that “Into the Blue” started to come together. Like the band’s best songs, it’s constructed on the interplay between Bryan’s fuzzed-out, taut guitar work, Rhydian Dafydd’s rumbling bass and Matt Thomas’ strong percussion. Dafydd even gets his own verse on the song, adding to the give-and-take between the trio. It’s the type of song that moves in waves, building and crashing into the shore.
On the song, Bryan said it’s about “having the courage to enjoy a new journey and the mystery and excitement of something unexpected” and “making it to the other side. Whilst not conceived as a metaphor for the times we all live in now, it certainly turned out that way.”
“Into the Blue” is out now.
