One of the best things about the original YOUNG JUSTICE was that writer Peter David never gave the members of the team much of a chance for a breather between adventures. So often, the next adventure would begin before the issue was over. It’s a breakneck pace that only teens would be able to keep, and Young Justice frequently bounced between worlds, usually unaware of where they would end up.
With the new iteration of the team, it really feels like Brian Bendis is homaging what came before, putting the reunited friends (along with some new allies) through the wringer. Brought together randomly in METROPOLIS and on Gemworld (where Superboy has been for an unspecified amount of time), the team manages to take down the world’s big bad – Lord Opal – and expects to be sent home to figure out their place on Earth.
It doesn’t work out that way. Same as it ever was.
The readers are left wondering where the team is off to at the end of the latest issue, as the Gemworld council decided to banish Amethyst and her new allies from the planet. Why that meant they had to send Young Justice hurtling into the Multiverse and not back home to Earth is, I’m sure, something Bendis will come back to. But the opportunity for everyone to deal with some weird and random experiences is high, and I am very much looking forward to what Bendis has planned.
