The CW has established itself as the home of hour-long shows based on comic book characters, and it looks to continue to expand that roster. But instead of adding to the “Arrowverse,” based on the DC Comics characters, we may get a new show with ties to RIVERDALE.
According to a report from Variety, the network is developing an hour-long show based on Sabrina, Archie’s witch pal. The show is reportedly taking its inspiration from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which debuted in 2014 and is currently on its eighth issue (published in August).
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic, written by Aguirre-Sacasa, is a darker modern take on the character, which spun off from Sabrina’s appearances in the Afterlife With Archie series. The show would be developed by Greg Berlanti, who has a successful relationship with The CW with both the DC Comics shows and Riverdale. Archie Comics chief creative officer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, will serve as writer and executive producer.
If the show gets a series order, which the article supposes has a good chance of happening, it would be the second live-action Sabrina series, after the 1996 ABC half-hour starring Melissa Joan Hart. That series ran for seven seasons, with 163 episodes. The character has also appeared in a few animated series, including one from 1971.
In addition to the Chilling Adventures book, Sabrina recently appeared in the updated JUGHEAD series, as a potential love interest for the historically asexual character, as Sabrina is working for Pop Tate in a burger costume to drum up business for the diner.
