It’s Morphin’ Time! I never thought I’d write those words… But the hit 1990s phenomenon is back and headed to the big screen, and a new trailer for the blockbuster was released earlier today.
I was never a fan of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers when they first hit the United States as a big thing. I was a teen at that point and still remembered Voltron – one of my favorites as a kid – and a lot of the setup for MMPR seemed like a ripoff of that franchise to me.
But here we are, 20-plus years later and the Power Rangers have a major motion picture reboot coming up while Voltron is still just doing animated series exclusive to Netflix. What a world.
The TV show was campy, so I’m glad to see that the trailer for the film is also a bit campy, because there’s a very real danger that they take the source material WAY TOO SERIOUSLY when they get a budget to blow stuff up. I don’t think that’s going to happen here.
The fight scenes are going to look a lot better than they did on the show, and the quality of the acting is probably going to be better, too, with Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks anchoring the cast as Zordon and Rita Repulsa.
The movie is scheduled for release on March 24, so get ready to be inundated with the Power Rangers.
