It’s one of the most defining shows of the 1990s, and it debuted 22 years ago today! Let’s take a look at Xena: Warrior Princess!

Originally appearing in a three-episode arc on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, the character of Xena proved so popular that executive producers RJ Stewart and Sam Raimi created a whole new world for the role played by Lucy Lawless.

The series followed the Warrior Princess and her compatriot Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) as Xena worked to atone for her past evil deeds by helping those in need. Lawless and O’Connor starred in all 6 seasons of the show, comprising of 134 episodes.

The syndicated program quickly became popular, as Xena took on bad guys ranging from evil warlords to gods themselves. It’s also possible that the ambiguous relationship between Xena and Gabrielle may have helped to keep some young men as regular viewers.

Even after airing its last original episode in 2001, the show has remained a staple of pop culture, with Xena: Warrior Princess frequently landing in the top rankings of cult favorite TV shows. A remake was considered back in 2015, although that was finally scuttled earlier this year.
