It seems like everyone is getting into the mobile action fighting RPG market, with new licenses popping up all the time. The Transformers have now entered the stage, with a generations-spanning game for fans of all versions of the Robots in Disguise.
After an earlier international release, the latest Transformers game has made its way to Apple’s App Store, and it’s brought along with it several different versions of the ‘bots. We have the more traditional designs mixed in with Michael Bay’s movie designs, and even some Beast Wars figures – though so far I’ve only come up against Rhinox.
I’ve played a couple of these mobile action fighting RPGs before, most notably the recent DC Comics’ Legends game released a few months back, and I can typically only play them for so long, mainly because at some point it seems like you either need to spend way too much time playing or just pay money to get anywhere in the game.
But is the game worth the time investment?
I spent a good chunk of yesterday playing the game, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it. In addition to the regular campaign mode, the game offers a variety of other modes and encourages you to play them in order to level yourself up. Transformers: Forged To Fight encourages alliances between players and even player raids to get more items to assist in upgrades.
That is all just secondary, though, to the main point of the game: giant robots beating the crap out of each other.
With a series of taps and dashes, the Transformers on your team battle others throughout the different game modes. The main story mode lays things out: While traveling, Optimus and a small band of Autobots are forced to land and explore a planet teeming with energy – and other Transformers. As you progress through the story mode, you pick up crystals to enlist other ‘bots through the Space Bridge to help you out.
The fighting is pretty smooth so far and the graphics on the game have been top notch, I think. The Autobots and Decepticons have rarely looked better – even the Transformers who are based on Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie look great. The backgrounds on the game seem to be based on Revenge of the Fallen’s Chicago landscapes, too.
I’m looking forward to picking up some new ‘bots, as I’ve yet to see some of my favorites. I have no idea if they’re even available, but it would be awesome to pick up a Wheeljack or Scorponok. Obviously, Grimlock would be the best get. I’m still working on it.
I think I probably have a couple more days worth of playing it before I get to a point where I either get bored of it or can’t get past it without paying money for new ‘bots. The free version of the game is definitely worth trying if you’re a Transformers fan, though.
