Song of the Week: Liela Moss – “Atoms At Me”

A swaggering rocker.

Over the last few years, Liela Moss has gradually expanded her repertoire beyond her day job with indie rockers The Duke Spirit. She’s one half of the electronica-tinged Roman Remains and launched a solo career in 2018. Now, she’s back for her second project under her own name, with “Atoms At Me” as the groove-heavy lead-off single.

The song veers closer to the rock of The Duke Spirit, but has a deep, danceable vibe at its core. There’s a bass-and-synth rhythm that compels you to move, while Moss’ vocals swoon and soar from nervous, quick lines to richer melodies. It feels like a dive under the surface of her mind, seeing what lies beneath. As Moss said herself about the tune, “If you’re going to deconstruct the modern psyche, you might as well dance to it.”

“Atoms At Me” will appear on Moss’ new album, Who The Power, out on Aug. 7 via Bella Union.
