A solemn search for a better America.
Even though Lana Del Rey is prepping to release her new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, in the coming weeks, she’s dropped a new tune inspired by recent tragedies. In the wake of last week’s mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Lana Del Rey quickly recorded and released “Looking for America,” a somber, pensive number of hope for a country where such horrors don’t happen.
Like her best songs, “Looking for America” creates a gentle bed to bolster Del Rey’s astounding, emotive voice. “I’m still looking for my own version of America/One without the gun, where the flag can freely fly/No bombs in the sky, only fireworks when you and I collide,” she sings, as a feathery mix of acoustic guitar and light synths float like wisps of smoke.
“Looking for America” is out now. Norman Fucking Rockwell drops on Aug. 30.
