After five years, Anna Calvi is back with an intense new track.
With her previous album released in 2013, Calvi has been gone for far too long. The guitarist extraordinaire returns with “Don’t Beat The Girl Out Of My Boy,” a distorted rocker that explores gender identity. While the song moves along at a steady pace, assisted by Calvi’s passionate, powerful vocals, it really takes off in the bridge. After a quick-fingered, fiery solo, her cries elevate into hurricane-strength wails. The song embraces a moment of chaos, a salvo against those who try to limit the self-expression of others.
As Calvi says, “It’s a song about the defiance of happiness. It’s about being free to identify yourself in whichever way you please, without any restraints from society.”
Her third album, Hunter, is out on Aug. 31 via Domino.
