A beautiful, smooth piece of music about falling in love.
Leon Bridges’ second album looks to expand the retro R&B sound he cultivated on his debut, Coming Home. But his throwback instincts remain intact and as powerful as ever. “Beyond” is a gently strummed acoustic number with a touch of digital drums. This mixture gives the track a warm, 1960s vibe but with modern touches that makes it more than nostalgia.
The strongest part of the track is Bridges’ excellent vocal delivery, passionate and strong. In every syllable, he gets across the fear and joy of falling in love. “I’m scared to death that she might be it/That the love is real, that the shoe might fit,” he sings. “Space and time in the afterlife/Will she have my kids? Will she be my wife?/She might just be my everything and beyond.” It’s the type of song that will leave you relaxed and blissed out.
“Beyond” is on Good Thing, his sophomore record out on May 4th, via Columbia.
