Happy Fall everyone! Now that Autumn is officially here, let’s get into the first of the season’s new films and albums.
Everyone’s (second) favorite British spy series is back with KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE. This time, Eggsy and his team must team up with their American counterparts to defeat a common enemy.
Also out, THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE. In the third of the Lego films, Six young ninjas are tasked with defending their island home, struggling with high school by day and their ninja duties by night.
If you want something less fanciful, try BATTLE OF THE SEXES. The movie tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell).
Other new films include the social-media horror flick (that’s a thing now) FRIEND REQUEST, the trippy drug film WOODSHOCK, and VICTORIA AND ABDUL, about the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria and an Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.
For music, The Killers return with WONDERFUL WONDERFUL, their first album in five years. From what we’ve heard so far, the album looks to meld their New Wave and Springsteen sides into a new whole. But with the same catchy, singalong choruses.
The goth vibes of The Horrors are also back on the airwaves with V. While their last couple of records have leaned towards psychedelia or even dream pop, this album looks to take on industrial atmospherics and a harsher perspective.
HISS SPUN, by Chelsea Wolfe, is another dark release out this week. While her music has always been foreboding, the guitars here are snarling and furious. This sinister sound is buoyed by guest appearances by Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age and Aaron Turner of Isis.
Other notables out this week? GEMINI by Macklemore, FOOL’S PARADISE by Cold Specks, SIR by Fischerspooner, BEFORE THE APPLAUSE by Re-TROS, ununiform by Tricky and STRANGER IN THE ALPS by Phoebe Bridgers.
That’s a lot of music and movies! What’s on your radar this weekend?
