With 2016 almost behind us, a quick glance at the new release calendar over at IMDb shows that the next 12 months should provide a lot of geeky goodness for moviegoers. From superhero sagas to sci-fi sequels, 2017 is packed with properties for every kind of geek.
The new year will be jam-packed with some great fun. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of what’s scheduled to be released in the first half of 2017.
January
Underworld: Blood Wars – The fifth (?!) theatrical Underworld release – how did that happen?
A Monster Calls – A tree monster helps a boy cope with his mom’s terminal illness, based on the book by James Ness. Felicity Jones of Rogue One stars as Mum.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – Well, until they reboot the franchise and start all over again, I’m guessing.
Split – An M. Night joint about a guy with 24 personalities and the people who must escape the bad ones. There will likely be a swerve…
February
Rings – 15 years after the original movie creeped movie-goers out, we get a third movie in the series.
The Lego Batman Movie – Probably the most fun superhero movie based on DC Comics characters that will be released in 2017.
Untitled Cloverfield Movie – Two months away and still no title, the official synopsis takes out to a space station with an altered reality. Could be an interesting addition to the anthology.

Logan – The latest solo X-Men: Wolverine film, Logan and Professor X must protect a young clone from an evil organization.
Kong: Skull Island – A King Kong origin tale with Sam Jackson? I’m sold.
Beauty and the Beast – A live action adaptation of the 1991 Disney classic animated film, with Emma Watson as Belle and Ewan McGregor as … Lumiere? Wait… what?
Power Rangers – The 1990s property I always considered a ripoff of Voltron gets a big screen reboot.
Ghost in the Shell – Based on the manga of the same name, the movie has received some criticism for casting Scarlett Johansson, but should be visually stunning.

Fast & Furious 8 – The Fate of the Furious brings the gang back together for another round of action in fast cars.
Spark – A teenage monkey teams up with his friends to save their world. How can you pass a premise like that up?
The Circle – Based on the Dave Eggers novel, Emma Watson and Tom Hanks star in the film about what happens if Apple went insane.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – The sequel to the surprise Marvel hit gets the Free Comic Book Day weekend slot this year. Also, Baby Groot.
Alien: Covenant – Ridley Scott’s latest in the series brings space explorers to what they assume is a paradise, but things get a little deadly.
Baywatch – If Power Rangers can get a big screen reboot, so can Baywatch! Girls in red swimsuits! The Rock! What else can you ask for?
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – Amazingly, a ride at Disney can spawn five feature films. Johnny Depp is back hamming it up as Jack Sparrow.

Wonder Woman – Maybe one of the most important superhero movies ever, and the first to star a female protagonist in the lead. This will be an important film for the rest of DC Comics’ slate of pictures.
The Mummy – Tom Cruise tries to resurrect a franchise that last featured Brendan Frasier. Look what happened to HIS career. We can only hope…
Cars 3 – Lightning McQueen gets pushed aside for younger, faster racers. It’s like real life in a Pixar film. Will likely be just as depressing…
Kingsman: The Golden Circle – A sequel to the film based on characters created by comic book guru Mark Millar. If it has half the goodwill of the first movie, it should be a fun flick.
Transformers: The Last Knight – Michael Bay’s Transformers aren’t going away anytime soon, as Optimus Prime looks to bring his home planet of Cybertron back to life.
Despicable Me 3 – Balthazar Bratt returns and sets in a plan for world domination.
