Quentin Tarantino and deep space action don’t really seem to go hand-in-hand, but the filmmaker may be taking steps to change that.

According to a Monday report from Deadline, the Pulp Fiction creator has “come up with a great idea” for a new STAR TREK picture – and no, you didn’t just fall asleep until April Fool’s Day. Tarantino is an avowed fan of the franchise, and is said to have shared his idea with JJ Abrams, who has his hands in both the STAR TREK and STAR WARS film universes at the moment. The Deadline report notes that if everything comes together – and I’m sure it’s far from a done deal, a writer’s room would come up with a story based on Tarantino’s pitch, and he could direct the movie with Abrams producing.

I’m not even sure I can wrap my head around a Star Trek film directed and with a story by Quentin Tarantino. The franchise has always been a family-friendly one, while Tarantino’s movies are decidedly not. While he has directed a few episodes of TV shows like CSI and E.R., his movies have always been HIS MOVIES, from conception to release.

It’s possible, though, that the news shouldn’t come as TOO much of a shock, especially considering Tarantino’s love of Star Trek. The website Birth. Movies. Death. unearthed an interview the director did with the Nerdist podcast where he talked about what he would do with a Star Trek picture. It has been helpfully posted to YouTube.

Before anything happens with a Tarantino Star Trek movie, he’s planning a movie set around the time of the Manson family murders, which is due in 2019 from Sony Pictures. We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes from the Star Trek rumors…
