The latest single by Oh Pep! is a study in contrasting elements that wind up working wonderfully together.

“Half Life” uses the styles and electronic vibe of many of today’s pop songs. But the Melbourne band fuse those sounds with a natural, orchestral swell. A shaking, shuddering violin leads the song into a blooming harp sound, where vocal harmonies abound. It’s a lovely, upbeat tune, that surprisingly tackles the moment of a breakup. But not every relationship has to dissolve into tears. “I play the part you gave to me/We pull apart so patiently,” they sing, embracing the end as a new beginning.

The song is part of the Thirty Days of Yes project, a mixtape in support of marriage equality in Australia. It’s available to purchase now.
